Questions we hear
From parents of babies, children and teens.
When should my child first see an eye doctor?
Eye-care groups suggest a first exam between 6 and 12 months, another around age 3, one before kindergarten or first grade, and regular exams after that. If you, a teacher or your pediatrician notice squinting, sitting very close to screens or an eye that turns, call us sooner.
Does my child need an exam if they seem to see fine?
Yes. Children rarely know how clearly they should see, so they don't complain. A screening at school or at the pediatrician is not the same as a full eye exam.
Can I stay with my child during the exam?
Yes, and we ask you to. A parent or guardian stays with the child at every visit. You can hold a baby, or sit beside the chair.
What if my child won't sit still?
Then we go slower. We use games, pictures and short breaks, and we can finish over a second visit when a child needs it.
Do you work with my vision plan?
We work with many vision plans and with medical insurance. Call us, and the front desk checks yours before the visit. How fees work explains which visits each plan pays.
Why was part of my visit billed to medical insurance?
When the doctor looks into a problem with the eyes, that work is medical, so it goes to medical insurance. The routine part goes to your vision plan.
Can I fill the prescription somewhere else?
Yes. Your prescription is yours. We give you a copy after the exam and fitting, and you can fill it anywhere.
What should I bring?
Your vision plan and medical insurance cards, your child's current glasses with their case and a toy or book for a small child. Our new patients page has the list.
Do you speak Spanish?
Dr. Ugalde, Ileana and Cruz speak Spanish. Dr. McNair sees patients in English, and one of them can sit in on request.
What do I do in an eye emergency?
Sudden vision loss, a curtain over the vision, a chemical splash or an eye injury needs care now. Call our office right away or go to an emergency room. If you can't reach us, call 911.
