Contact lenses for teens and parents
Contact lenses are a fit as well as a prescription. A teen who is ready, and who can follow a care routine, can ask about them at an exam. Your contact lens prescription is yours too.
A fitting visit, a trial pair and a follow-up
We teach putting in, taking out and cleaning, with a parent present for a teen
A written copy of the prescription, to fill anywhere

What happens at a fitting
Two or three visits, each about 30 minutes.
- 01
Step 1: A contact lens exam
A routine exam plus measurements of the eye's surface for a lens that fits.
- 02
Step 2: A trial pair
You try a pair in the office, and we check how they sit and how they feel.
- 03
Step 3: Learning the routine
We practice putting in, taking out and cleaning until it feels easy.
- 04
Step 4: A follow-up
We see how the eyes are doing with the lenses and make changes if needed.
How it is billed
A contact lens exam and fitting is billed separately from a routine eye exam, and the lenses themselves are billed on their own. We tell you what each part is before you start.
Vision plan
Often pays toward the exam, the fitting or the lenses. Plans differ, so the front desk checks yours.
Paying yourself
A written estimate before the fitting, with the fitting and the lenses listed apart.
Your prescription is yours
After the exam and fitting we give you a copy, with nothing to buy first. Fill it here or anywhere you like.
Questions we hear
How old does my child need to be for contact lenses?
There is no single age. The doctor looks at whether your child can care for the lenses, and you help decide.
Can I have my contact lens prescription?
Yes. After the exam and fitting we give you a copy. Your prescription is yours, and you can fill it anywhere.
Do contact lenses need extra visits?
Yes. A fitting takes a trial pair and a follow-up, and then regular exams so the doctor can check the eyes.
